Magnolia West defensive end Xavier Jones gave the University of Houston a verbal commitment over the weekend, becoming the first member of the 2014 recruiting class.
“He’s a dynamic defensive player,” Magnolia West coach Shawn Bell said Monday. “He has a motor. He’s a non-stop active, always flying around until he gets to the football defender.”
Jones was the District 18-4A Defensive Player of the Year last season after producing 10 tackles for loss, 11 quarterback hurries and five sacks.
“He’s the best defensive player I have been around,” Bell said.
Bell said Jones is still “a little bit underweight for college football” at 6-3 and 200 pounds but that’s something he’s working on.
“But for his weight, strength and explosiveness, it’s off the chart,” Bell said.
